Tubing the Little Cahaba

Posted by: laurel    Tags:      Posted date:  March 28, 2012  |  2 Comments

I am a true water person. Maybe it’s the Scorpio in me, or maybe it has something to do with growing up in a state with so many waterways – rivers, lakes and beaches included. Whether the stars or my home state are to blame, there are few activities I enjoy more than a day on the water.

Now, that’s not to say that I always want to exert a lot of energy in the water. To me, on a nice hot day, there’s very little that beats a good float with a nice, cold beverage. As you might have already guessed one of my hobbies of choice is tubing.

For those unfamiliar with tubing, it can be summed up pretty quickly.

  1. Drive to water.
  2. Pick out tube.
  3. Put tube in water, place yourself in the tube and see where the current takes you.

If you’re in the Birmingham area, an afternoon tubing trip is as convenient as a 45-minute drive outside the city towards Montevallo.  The Limestone Canoe Club in Brierfield offers tubing seven days a week during the summer. (Hint: Turn when you see the canoe sticking out of a tree. Otherwise, you’ll miss your destination and drive unnecessarily into the country for quite a few miles. Who would miss a canoe sticking out of a tree, you say? It can happen, and it should not be blamed on the driver despite the driver’s boyfriend’s feelings on the matter.)

There are no frills at Limestone. After paying $10 for your tube (prices subject to change), you’ll be transported down to the Little Cahaba River in the back of a truck and take off from there.

According to the Sweet Home Alabama website, it takes about an hour and a half to get down this particular stretch of water. My trip was closer to two hours, but I like to people watch, and the diving platform was very intriguing.

Tubing the Little Cahaba is an afternoon well spent, and I highly recommend it. However, remember what I said about the no frills part? You won’t find a website for Limestone. You’ll have to call for information, and if the weather looks iffy, I’d be sure to check on the situation at Limestone before putting on my bathing suit and jumping in the car.

Is there an age limit to get on a tube, and is there camping sites available for motor homes? If so how much is it to camp

From my observations, people of all ages were on tubes. I saw a lot of children. However, I didn’t notice any camping sites nearby. I would recommend calling the center directly to see if they know of any good camping since I’m not from the immediate area. Thanks so much for visiting the site!
